SUZIE'S CIRCLE OF HEARTS BERET

SIZES:
Women’s small and medium

MATERIALS:



Simply Soft or similar soft worsted weight yarn
Approximately 2.5 ounces for sm, 3 ounces for med
I (5.5 mm) crochet hook


Yarn needle
Optional H (5.0 mm) crochet hook

NOTES:
1. Read instructions all the way through before beginning.
2. I crocheted one of these out of Red Heart Super Saver and it is too stiff to drape nicely. Even after washing and drying it just doesn’t work for this pattern.
3. If you want your beret slouchier, work one or two rounds more before the first decrease round.

WOMEN’S MEDIUM:

Ch 4, join with a slipstitch to form a loop

Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), *dc, ch 1, repeat from * 10 times. Join with a slipstitch in 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. (12 dc and 12 ch 1 sp)

Round 2: Slipstitch in first ch 1 sp, ch 1, sc in same ch 1 sp. *ch 3, sc in next sp, repeat from * around. End with ch 3. Join with slipstitch in first sc. (12 ch 3 loops)

Round 3: Slipstitch in ch 3 loop, ch 1, sc in same loop. *Ch 2, 3 dc in next loop, ch 2, sc in next loop, repeat from * around. End with ch 2, 3 dc in next loop, ch 2. Join with a slipstitch in first sc. (6 3 dc groups)

Round 4: Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch 2). *2 Dc in next dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 2, dc in next sc, ch 2, repeat from * around. End with 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 2. Join with a slipstitch in 3rd ch of starting ch 5. (6 5 dc groups)

Round 5: *Slipstitch in ch 2 sp, skip next dc. *3 Dc in next dc, slipstitch in next dc, 3 dc in next dc, skip dc, slipstitch in next ch 2 sp, sc in dc, slipstitch in ch 2 sp, skip next dc, repeat from * around. End with 3 dc in next dc, slipstitch in next dc, 3 dc in next dc, skip dc, slipstitch in next ch 2 sp. Join with a slipstitch in first slipstitch. (6 hearts)



Round 6: Ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2), dc in same st, ch 2. *Dc in slipstitch in center of heart, ch 2, dc, ch 2, dc in same st, ch 2, dc in next sc, ch 2, dc in same st, ch 2. Repeat from * around. End with dc in slipstitch in center of heart, ch 2, dc, ch 2, dc in same st, ch 2. Join with a slipstitch in 3rd ch of ch 5.

There should be 3 dc in the center of each heart and 2 dc in the dc between the hearts. For a total of 30 dc and 30 ch 2 spaces.

Round 7: Ch 2 (don’t count as a dc), dc in same st as join. *2 Dc in ch 2 sp, dc in dc. Repeat from * around. End with 2 dc in ch 2 sp. Join with a slipstitch in top of fiirst dc. (90 dc)

Round 8: : Ch 2 (don’t count as a dc), dc in same st as join, dc in 3 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in 4 sts. Repeat from * around. End with 2 dc in last st. Join with slipstitch in first dc. (108 dc)

Round 9-12: Ch 2 (don’t count as a dc), dc in same st as join, dc in each st around. Join with slipstitch in first dc. (108 dc)

Beret should measure about 13 inches.

Round 13: Ch 2 (don’t count as a dc), dc in same st as join, dc in 6 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts. *dc in 7 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts, repeat from * around. Join with slipstitch in top of first dc. (96 dc)

Round 14: Ch 2 (don’t count as a dc), dc in same st as join, dc in 2 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts. *dc in 6 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts, repeat from * around. End with dc in last 3 sts. Join with slipstitch in top of first dc. (84 dc)

Round 15: Ch 2 (don’t count as a dc), dc in same st as join, dc in 4 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts. *dc in 5 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts, repeat from * around. Join with slipstitch in top of first dc. (72 dc)

Round 16: Ch 2 (don’t count as a dc), dc in same st as join, dc in 1 st, dc dec over next 2 sts. *dc in 4 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts, repeat from * around. End with dc in last 2 sts. Join with a slipstitch in top of first dc. (60 dc)

Round 17: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a slipstitch in top of first sc. (60 dc)

Try on beret. If it seems too large, switch to H hook for final rounds.

Rounds 18-20: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a slipstitch in top of first sc. (60 dc)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Round 14: Ch 2 (don’t count as a dc), dc in same st as join, dc in 1 st, dc dec over next 2 sts. *dc in 4 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts, repeat from * around. End with dc in last 2 sts. Join with a slipstitch in top of first dc. (60 dc)

Round 15: Ch 2 (don’t count as a dc), dc in same st as join, dc in 7 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts. *dc in 8 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts, repeat from * around. Join with a slipstitch in top of first dc. (54 dc)

Round 16: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a slipstitch in top of first sc. (54 sc)

Try on beret. If it seems too large, switch to H hook for final rounds.

Rounds 17-19: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a slipstitch in top of first sc. (54 sc)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Suzie, Thanks so much for the beret crochet pattern. I wanted a pattern to crochet for my granddaughter who is turning 12 next month. We were out eating the other day and I saw a little girl with the cutest beret on and we asked if someone had crocheted it for her and they had just bought it at Oshe B Gosh. I had been on line looking for a pattern when I saw yours. I guess I would do the small.

This is a beautiful pattern. I love how feminine and lacy the centre is. Am nearly finished making a slouchy version of this for my sisters christmas present. Simply stunning. Thank you for sharing! :0)
